Error during initial project creation; SharePoint permissions-related?

jcopella 10-03-2008, 9:53 PM
Hello,

We've installed SfTS v2.1, apparently successfully.  Our local admin doesn't recall creating or installing TFS using the TFSSETUP account, so (we think) we installed using the local admin account.  Accordingly, we also installed SfTS v2.1 using a local admin account.  TFS & SharePoint are on the same server, and we are running TFS 2008 SP1, with SQL 2005.  There were no errors during the SfTS v2.1 install.

However, the first time we create a project, we are prompted for the project name, description, and the template.  We choose SfTS v2.1 and get to the downloading process template dialog, before we get an error dialog.

The installation log file is attached.

Hello JCopella,

Sorry to hear you are having problems. The error message you posted states the the account does not have sufficent permisson to create the SharePoint project.

Permission in TFS are quite complex, spanning TFS, SharePoint and SQLServer.

Firstly, I would make sure that the account you are using [to create the new team project] has permission to to create SharePoint sites.

Post back with your findings.

Hello Crispin,.

Thank you so much for your quick reply.

I am told by our Sys Admin that the account we are using to install is a local administrator, and that yes, that account does have permission to create SharePoint sites.  He just ran a test using that account to create a test site, and was able to do so successfully.

Is there a next step for us to try?

Regards,

John

Edit: Sorry Crispin, I was mistaken - what we've verified is that the account has the permission to add pages to an *existing* site.  We have NOT confirmed it has the privileges to create a *new* site.  He's checking that now.

The "Template" is not just a SharePoint site definition. There are many components to the template, webparts, report definitions, work item templates, pre-defined queries, event subscriptions, web site creations and a host of other minor tasks. Manually installing the template components would be very difficult and require excellent knowledge of SharePoint, SQL Server Reporting Services and Team Foundation Server.

If those users experiencing problems could please post their installation logs I could take a look and hopefully find the cause of the issue.

I've had a little hunt around on Google and came up with the below MSDN forum post:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2802056&SiteID=1

I think the issues described in this post might be the same as those you have reported. Do you want to try the advice detailed in the post and let me know if it has helped?

Crispin:

That's indeed promising.  I've queued up a request for our sys admin and will let you know our findings.  Thank you very much for your persistence & continued attention.

John

Crispin,

Just to update you on what's transpired here in the last few days/weeks:

Our system administrator tried a number of remedies, all to no avail, and eventually abandoned the attempt.  He then built a new HyperV server (virtual machine) running Windows Server 2003 R2, and did clean installs of all products: SQL 2005, SharePoint, TFS, etc.  He was able to successfully install SFTS v2.2 into this configuration, and we are evaluating the process template now.

Sorry we were never able to come to closure on the difficulties in the earlier environment, but I appreciate your help & prompt responses to our queries.
