Hi
we have added a field in TFS Scrum template "Actual Efforts" so we can track the actuals. Irrespective of how the academic discussion about whether it is Scrum or not to track actual efforts, there is a strong need in our organisation to tarck actual efforts for various reasons (the other posts pretty much reflect our reasons as well..). So please inform how we can customize Task Board to have this field included as well; as from the replies to this thread I can gauge that there is only limited interest by Conchango to have this implemented as standard feature. ty joe

Hi,
I was surprised when I read that this discussion is percieved as "academic" - I am quite new to the Scrum topic, but from what I have learned so far, it seems to work and already helped a lot of projects to perform better. The danger of weakening the process by allowing old thinking patters to come back in is that you are giving a wrong signal to the team. E.g. the message if you do actual time recording is "it is important how much you work on a story" whereas the Scrum message is "it is important how many stories you get done, then only you add value".
Am I wrong?
Regards,
Christian

I think that the most companies already have a separate Time Reporting System since long before the Team System era.
What we have done is to adapt our present Time Reporting System with a SBI field, that is actually validated against TFS web services. This encourages to report as much time as possible to specific SBIs and not to general black hole buckets.
We have then simply made SQL queries that sums up actual hours on SBI:s and grouped by PBI/Bug. These SQL queries fetches data both from Time Reporting System and the TFS. This makes it also possible to create invoices based on actual hours grouped by PBI/Bug titles.
Summary: Avoid to force team members to report actual hours more then once. Adapt present Time Reporting System, not the SfTS templates. Avoid to clutter the SfTS templates with out of the scope data/logic.
Best regards,
Benjamin T [CSM]
