Hi Crispin --

I ran this command:
for /f %s in ('dir /b *.mof *.mfl')do mofcomp %s

And it worked successfully.  It cycled through a bunch of files and didn't throw any errors.  I went back and tried the wbemtest.exe again and still go an error.  I took a screen shot and attached it to this post.

So sorry for all the difficulties, but thank you for your help with all this.

Re: Beta 3 - Provider load failure
Hi Dave,

We don't seem to be making much progress here. The only new peice of information I can get from the latest results is that the "WinMgmt" service is some how involved. So, can you ensure that the "Windows Management Instrumentation" service is running on your system? However, disabling this service on my system does not trigger the "Provider Load Failure" message.

I'm rapidly running out of ideas, as a last ditch atempt, we can go back to my original assumption. Maybe the sequence in which the .Net Famework versions have been installed has caused this problem. Re-installing the latest .Net version (3.5) may help by updating the mysterious registry keys to the correct configuration.

Also, does your event log contain any helpful, detailed error messages that might shed some light on this?

Re: Beta 3 - Provider load failure
I guess we'll give up on it.  For my part, it's just a minor annoyance.  When I load TaskBoard, the error pops up.  I click "Ok" and then I'm in and everything seems to work fine.  There are several other developers around me who all have and use TaskBoard.  I'm the only one who gets the error.

I'll just live with it.

Thanks for all your help, though.  I'm impressed by your attention to this matter.

NOOOO, Don't give up.

We are having the problem, and of course on the PC that needs it the most.
I was hoping you guys could trace the error.

(Our solution currently is to have the taskboard running on a server, and use a RemoteDesktop to this server. I hope i'm not violating the licence...)

Interestingly, the MSDN web page I originally suggested has been updated. It now includes a vbscript that you can run in order to re-register the "System.Management" dlls that appear to have been broken by the 3.5 framework release.

Please review: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb961987.aspx

Hopefully, this indicates that Microsoft have identified the problem.

Which would suggest there is deffinatly something wrog, but not with the taskboard.

I will forward the updated page to my co-worker.
Perhaps we can throw an half hour at it next week.

Re: Beta 3 - Provider load failure
Hi Crispin --

I followed the instructions to register the System.Management.Instrumentation.dll file.  I was able to do that successfully, but unfortunately I'm still getting the TaskBoard error.  Very frustrating, but as you suggest, may be an issue on my system unrelated to TaskBoard.  I'm not losing sleep over this since I still have TaskBoard functioning.

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for all the effort regarding this issue. We have planned to deal with this really soon, by following the instructions given in these posts.

Re: Beta 3 - Provider load failure NOOOOO
I have tried everything suggested thus far, and nothing has resolved the problem. (including Microsofts KB article).

All of the various re-registration mechanisms executed successfully, but I still get the provider error.

Also, I am an administrator on my machine and I do not see anything in the local security policy that would interfere with this mechanism. Is there a setting I should be looking for?

Re: Beta 3 - Provider load failure NOOOOO
Unknown on a possible security policy that might cause this problem. As stated, this error cannot be re-created in any of our test environments and (as you can see from my above posts) I have tried very hard!

Is this problem common to all machines in your company (do you have access to another machine?) or just your own? If it occurs on all machines, then I would expect that there is a common group policy setting at the root, if it is just your machine then I'm kind of out of ideas!

The symptoms of this condition are that the built in WIM test tool also fails to work. I made an asumption above that the sequence of .Net framework instalation may have been a contributing factor, but this has yet to be proven.

It may be worth while running the wim test appliction while monitoring with ProcessMonitor (Sys Internals / Microsoft). This may highlight which assembles are being accessed when the error occurs.
